Clinker kilns are the core plant in cement production and are typically located in close proximity to limestone mines. There are three key factors determining the location :

  • Costs of capacity under-utilisation can be high. High capital costs are incurred as a result of excess capacity experienced during a downturn in demand. Demand for cement is cyclical and manufacturers seek to minimise risk by ensuring that capacity does not greatly exceed demand over many years.

  • Raw material supply is critical. Clinker production must be located close to supplies of limestone, so the reserve and means of transport of limestone affects kiln location.

  • Kiln technology and equipment are very long-lived with economic lives of at least 30 to 40 years. This means that changes in the number and types of kilns occur slowly.
